Before These Eyes
by John Michael Ray

It’s never the same
After all is said and done
Nobody’s to blame
For what we have become
A little bit tired
A lot less caution to the wind
Reluctance at hand
To start it all over again

It doesn’t seem fair
Feels like paying for another’s sins
Should be devil may care
And not about the one who wins
Once bitten, twice shy
So hesitant to jump the gun
A definite loss
Of the innocence when we were young

The walls be build to protect ourselves
Aren’t what life should be made of
When you’re looking to find the feeling
Of your first summer love
The games we play in the name of pride
Won’t allow the rise above
When you’re looking to find the feeling
Of your first summer love

So time passes on
The drummer plays a slower beat
We’ve waited so long
The fire burns a lesser heat
The sharing of two
A little harder after being one
Like the stormiest nights
That keep you longing for the morning sun

The walls be build to protect ourselves
Aren’t what life should be made of
When you’re looking to find the feeling
Of your first summer love
The games we play in the name of pride
Won’t allow the rise above
When you’re looking to find the feeling
Of your first summer love

Bring my heart back to another time
So young, naive and free
Before the trials, the hurt and pain
Before these eyes could see

The walls be build to protect ourselves
Aren’t what life should be made of
When you’re looking to find the feeling
Of your first summer love
The games we play in the name of pride
Won’t allow the rise above
When you’re looking to find the feeling
Of your first summer love
