My Cross
by John Michael Ray

As darkness slowly closes in
My cross is borne with pain
Said I never would return
Yet, here I am again
Many times the dreams have died
More often they've been slain
My own actions, my worst nemesis
My cross is borne with pain

As daylight nears within arm's reach
My cross begins to shake
Tired of falling two steps back
For every step I take
Many times I start anew
After yet, one more mistake
My own touch, the hand of shame
My cross begins to shake

As one day gives way to another
My cross it weighs me down
For every trail I've left behind
I wear this thorn-made crown
Many times the tears I cry
Are hidden by the clown
My own thoughts, voice insanity
My cross it weighs me down

As time moves on with shades of grey
My cross it starts to burn
Rising flames of consequence
And lessons never learned
Many times contrition acts
New leaves get overturned
My own life, rusted with regret
My cross it starts to burn

As I stand before you all
My cross it turns to ash
I prayed the Lord my soul to take
My soul's about to crash
Many times the psyche leaves
This time without a flash
My own demise, often foretold
My cross it turns to ash
