Sleeping Dogs Lie
by John Michael Ray

Waking up to another message from you
I thought we were done, last time I looked we were through
Every time I feel myself starting to heal
You draw me back in, into another ordeal
I'm keeping my promise to leave you alone
I'm turning it off, Fuck!, I'm turning to stone
You're accumulating frequent flyer miles on my heart
So much for letting you go to make a healthy new start

Why couldn't you just leave that sleeping dog alone?
Why, after all this time do you still throw that bone?
Why must you always wake this savage beast inside?
Why is it so hard for you to let a sleeping dog lie?

You weren't the first, no, you won't be the last
And I know I got a lot of shit to get past
Either building it up or cutting it down to size
Got me shaking all over, fever's starting to rise
In a world full of wrongs, did I do anything right?
Slapped by your memory every day, every night
Not a lesson to be learned, no words to the wise
How can they say silence is the hardest good-bye

Why couldn't you just leave that sleeping dog alone?
Why, after all this time do you still throw that bone?
Why must you always wake this savage beast inside?
Why is it so hard for you to let a sleeping dog lie?

We were supposed to be the future
Seems I forgot about the here and now
The fallout now seems endless
Something about a broken vow
And as we walk the road well traveled
Our steps are so much out of sync
The fallout now seems pointless
As we hover on the brink

Why couldn't you just leave that sleeping dog alone?
Why, after all this time do you still throw that bone?
Why must you always wake this savage beast inside?
Why is it so hard for you to let a sleeping dog lie?
