Surreality (Surreal/Reality)
by John Michael Ray

As the clouds float high
Above the night time air
They cast an eerie shade
Of black on black
They hide the stars
Engulf the ebony shadows
Of where we once stood
In a world far back

Hancuffed together
Ethereal restraints
Exchanging promise rings of doom
Unsolemnly sworn
As the night time lifts
The clouds still remain
Hung like a mural
O'er this purple, grey morn

Memories fade in time
Yellowed antiquity
Finally laid to rest
By cereberally shredding
No amount of faith
Can reverse the sting
Of fractured chrystal dreams
Remnants of forgetting

Open wounds weep
From black widow bites
A scorpion in disguise
Disinfect them with hate
Healing in due time
A rail line of scars
Miscalculated risks
And odder twists of fate
----------
Should have made it happen
But I watched it happen
Ended up wondering, what the hell happened
Should have made it happen
But I watched it happen
Ended up wondering, what the hell happened here

A white knuckle grip on reality
I'm doing what I can
To keep you from pulling me down (pulling me down)
Whiplash, giving my head a shake
I'm fighting all I can
To keep you from pulling me down (pulling me down)
Unbalanced, with both feet flat on the ground
Running fast as I can
To keep you from pulling me down (pulling me down)
Just a couple bats short of insanity
It's all I can do
To keep you from pulling me down (pulling me down)

Should have made it happen
But I watched it happen
Ended up wondering, what the hell happened
Should have made it happen
But I watched it happen
Ended up wondering, what the hell happened here
----------
I remember the night
I was up all week
I started counting the wolves
Cause they were eating the sheep
It was the night of the dark
The reaper was grim
The sandman was high
Swapped their souls for some sleep

I'd rather have a friend
In whom I can rely
Than a lover I can't
That would be you
Up to your neck
More often over your head
Wading knee deep in shame
Destined for bayous of blue
